Entlehnt aus ne. showdown, eigentlich "das Aufdecken der Karten beim Pokern", einer Zusammensetzung aus ne. show "zeigen" (Show) und ne. down "hinunter, unten" (aus ae. dūne, dūn, aus ae. of dūne "von dem Hügel bzw. der Höhe", zu ae. dūn f. "Hügel", für das man keltischen Ursprung vermutet; Düne). Zunächst Bezeichnung des spielentscheidenden Offenlegens der Karten; dann verallgemeinernd übertragen auf Entscheidungssituationen (z.B. in Westernfilmen).
